What do we eat? Interactive tool for predictive modelling fish fatty acid composition

Project

Aquafat project (Predictive modelling of flesh fatty acid composition in cultured fish species with different muscle lipid content) is funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.

Given the health benefits of ω-3 highly polyunsaturated fatty acids in the human diet, it is vital to address the nutritional tailoring of aquacultured sea foods. This objective is integrated into AquaFat project to ensure the compatibility of novel fish diets with a sustainable aquaculture development that primes the production of healthy and high quality fish products.

AquaFat also places special emphasis on functional genomics and new tools are developed for monitoring the nutritional regulation of fish transcriptome (www.nutrigroup-iats.org/seabreamdb). The information generated is of particular importance to understand how a tissue-specific FA profile is achieved, which facilitates the development and application of selective breeding programs for tailored fish strains.
